Settlement with Company that Forced an Employee to Quit His Job after Reporting a Manager Racially and Sexually Harassed Him
Today, the Minnesota Department of Human Rights announced a settlement agreement<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjA0MDcuNTYxMDc4MzEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL21uLmdvdi9tZGhyL25ld3MtY29tbXVuaXR5L25ld3Nyb29tL2NpdmlscmlnaHRzdXBkYXRlcy5qc3A_aWQ9NTI0MjMzIn0.RdVq0hUDWv8ZrTVnMyGk4fYs1SvTj8WF6c3lr2K-rLU/s/2159497629/br/129530256987-l> with Paramount Auto Service that requires the company to pay a former employee $60,000 and make changes so the workplace is discrimination-free.
[Quote from Commissioner Lucero about the Settlement Agreement]
"When its employee courageously reported the harassment, the company instead made this employee's life miserable and ultimately pushed him out of the job," Rebecca Lucero, Commissioner
About the Case
MDHR's investigation found that a manager at Paramount Auto Service's Rosemount store sexually harassed employees and prevented them from speaking up. Paramount Auto Service was aware and refused to take meaningful action.
When a Latino employee told Paramount Auto Service that this same manager repeatedly called him by a racial slur and sexually harassed him, the company ignored the employee's complaints and used several strategies to force him to quit his job.
The company required the employee to relocate to a different store, causing him to have a longer commute. The company also reduced the employee's pay by giving him less favorable hours and assigning him work that resulted in lower commissions.
