Job Description:
The Iowa Department for the Blind is seeking an Independent Living Rehabilitation Teacher. We are looking for someone who has a positive attitude toward blindness, is passionate about working with a diverse population and individuals at any period of human development, has excellent problem-solving skills, and demonstrates an appreciation for learning and teaching. This is an opportunity to join a team of energetic professionals who enjoys making a difference in the lives of those served. Domicile will take place in Polk County; however, this may be negotiated.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Coordinate work with supervisor, and as appropriate program’s division team and cross-division teams.
* Receives and completes assigned program applications.
* Obtain, analyze, and interpret eye and request other medical reports as needed.
* Determine applicant eligibility for program based on governing regulations and policies.
* Provide adjustment to blindness counseling and non-visual skills training instruction.
* Completes skills assessment and supports client to develop Independent Living plan goal and training objectives.
* Demonstrate assistive technology to include aids, devices, equipment, and training supplies.
* Completes case management and case load duties accurately and on time in accordance with policy.
* Conducts speaking engagements and in-services with large or small groups, radio engagements, or other venues to promote the program and agency.
* Communicates clearly with individuals and groups, verbally, and produces clear written documents using the English language.
* Move and/or transport items (e.g., assistive technology devices or equipment) - approximately 25 pounds - between office/domicile, vehicles, and site visits.
* Uses computer, iPhone, WORD, Excel, PowerPoint, various iPhone apps, copier, and fax and/or scanner.
* Travels across Iowa in all types of weather; some meetings are scheduled after hours and require overnight stays.
Regional Focus: Statewide travel required with focus assignment: Benton, Cedar, Clinton, Iowa, Jackson, Johnson, Jones, Linn, Poweshiek, and Tama.
Domicile: Polk County or to be negotiated within the region served
Hours Worked: Monday through Friday
Full-time; 40 hours per week
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. M-F; schedule may vary with possible with potential for compressed work schedule. Statewide travel and overnight stays required.
This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department for the Blind. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.
Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university and experience equal to one year of full-time professional or paraprofessional work in human service fields such as: social services; nursing; personnel; vocational rehabilitation; education; psychology; or intangible sales, interviewing, recruiting, and promotion; recreation, public information, volunteer service for public or private organizations, fund raising, or ministry in a recognized faith or denomination;
OR
graduation from an accredited college university with a major emphasis in library science or liberal arts and at least one year of library work experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the equivalent of one year of full-time work experience (as listed above) for each year of the required education to a maximum substitution of four years
