Society for the Blind, located in Sacramento California, has been providing individuals living with blindness or low vision training, tools, and mentorship to achieve their full potential for nearly seventy years.  Our organization is currently seeking experienced, qualified candidates for an open Adaptive Technology Instructor position.  A description of the job is provided below. Job Title:                                Adaptive Technology Instructor
Classification:                       Non-Exempt/Full-Time
Reports to:                             Core Skills Program Manager

General Description:  The essential functions of the job are to effectively teach computer and adaptive technology skills to Society for the Blind clients pursuing vocational and independent living goals, maintain expertise in all pertinent areas of adaptive and other technology, and collaborate with instructional and other team members to develop and maintain a program of excellence.

Duties:

Instruction:

  1.  Teach small group and individual classes in adaptive technology for blind and visually impaired clients.
  2.  Assess and evaluate clients as to appropriate instructional modalities, and determine hardware, software, and other equipment needs.
  3.  Work with Department of Rehabilitation counselors to ensure that clients receive all instruction, software, equipment, and other support necessary for these individuals to achieve their vocational and independent living goals.
  4.  Develop and update curriculum as needed to optimize learning outcomes.
  5.  Stay current regarding the latest adaptive technology.
  6.  Assist with facilitation of peer-led support groups, instructional workshops, and other client activities.
  7.  Consistently achieve high level of excellence in both instruction and productivity.

Documentation:

  1.  Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely ongoing recordkeeping of client services, including, but not limited to case notes, lesson notes, and progress reports.
  2.  Complete time sheets, time off requests, and other employee documentation accurately, thoroughly, and on time.

Teambuilding and Communication:

  1.  Share client issues with instructional team members and collaborate to determine workable solution while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.

  1.  Communicate with DOR counselors, family members and other appropriate parties regarding client progress and other issues.
  2.  Maintain positive and professional relations with counselors of Department of Rehabilitation and other agencies as well as Society clients, staff, and volunteers.
  3.  Refer clients to other agency and non-agency programs and services where appropriate.

Others Duties:

  1.  Attend all staff and department meetings.
  2.  Adhere to all Society policies and procedures.
  3.  Obtain training to enhance job effectiveness.
  4.  Stay current in areas of responsibility.
  5.  Other duties as assigned or needed.

Qualifications:

  1.  Expertise regarding Windows operating systems,
  2.  Mastery of JAWS, Windows Narrator, and IOS Voiceover., as well as associated keyboard commands and gestures.
  3.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook & internet browsers such as Google Chrome.
  4.  Expertise in ZoomText and Windows Magnifier.
  5.  Proficiency in the use of Braille note taking and other Braille devices preferred.
  6.  Expertise in Mac OS preferred
  7.  Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  8.  Strong organizational and time management skills.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1.  High school diploma or GED, Bachelor's degree or higher preferred.
  2.  Successful completion of an adaptive technology certification program preferred.
  3.  Minimum two years work experience.
