We are recruiting to fill an Assistive Tech Consultant vacancy with the NM Commission for the Blind.  The position is in our Albuquerque office and serves the extended Albuquerque metropolitan area as well as Northern New Mexico.

Job Title: Assistive Tech Consultant

Salary: The salary range for this position is $45,680 to $68,520 Annually ($21.96 to $32.94 Hourly). Offered salary will be based on education and experience.

Why does the job exist? This role helps blind and visually impaired clients gain or maintain independence in work, school, and daily life by delivering hands-on assistive technology services. The Assistive Technology Specialist evaluates client needs, recommends appropriate tools, installs and configures devices, and provides one-on-one training tailored to each individual. The job blends technical expertise with thoughtful instruction, requiring a strong foundation in general information technology (IT) systems as well as a working knowledge of assistive technology. Assistive Tech Consultants also collaborate closely with vocational rehabilitation counselors and team members to align services, document progress, and support clients through significant life transitions.

How does it get done?


  *   Evaluate client needs, skill levels, and environments to determine appropriate assistive technology that supports vocational and educational goals.
  *   Recommend tools and configurations to vocational rehabilitation counselors based on accessibility needs, system compatibility, and client objectives.
  *   Install, configure, and troubleshoot a range of assistive technologies, including screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, Narrator, oiceOver), magnification software (ZoomText, Magnifier, Zoom), digital magnifiers, Braille displays, OCR tools, and mobile devices.
  *   Provide individualized training to clients, many of whom are adjusting to vision loss or unfamiliar with the technologies being introduced.
  *   Perform maintenance and diagnostics on client devices, prepare laptops for deployment, and advise on system specifications as needed.
  *   Maintain accurate, timely case documentation; communicate service updates to counselors; and manage files with strong organizational practices.
  *   Travel to client homes, schools, and workplaces throughout the state to deliver, support, and troubleshoot technology in person.
  *   Collaborate with a team of assistive tech Consultants and vocational rehabilitation counselors to coordinate services and share expertise.

Who are the customers? The primary customers are blind and visually impaired individuals who are working toward personal independence and employment through the use of assistive technology. These clients include high school students, college students, and jobseekers. The position also supports vocational rehabilitation counselors by delivering timely technical assessments, recommendations, training updates, and follow-up documentation that contributes to successful case outcomes.

Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree and at least two years of professional experience in the field of assistive technology, information technology, or a related field.
Preferred experience includes:

  *   Experience working with assistive technology for blindness or low vision, such as screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, Narrator, VoiceOver), screen magnification tools (ZoomText, Magnifier, Zoom), Braille displays and notetakers, OCR tools, or accessible mobile devices.
  *   Professional experience troubleshooting computer systems, diagnosing hardware or software issues, and performing maintenance and repair tasks across platforms such as Windows, Mac OS, iOS, or Android.
  *   Experience delivering technical support or training in a structured environment such as education, rehabilitation, or information technology services.
  *   Experience providing training, support, or assessments to individuals adjusting to vision loss, especially related to assistive technology use.
  *   Experience maintaining accurate service records, case notes, or client documentation in a professional setting.

Minimum Qualifications: Associate degree and two (2) years of professional experience in assistive technology related to blindness or low vision. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Working Conditions:
This position is based in an office setting with frequent travel to client homes, educational institutions, and employer sites. The role includes regular use of computers, assistive technology devices, and visual display terminals. Physical activity includes lifting standard hardware, walking, standing, bending, sitting, and occasional crawling during equipment setup. The role may involve interaction with individuals who have secondary disabilities or exhibit challenging behaviors. Occasionally exposed to service animals. Occasional overnight travel may be required using agency vehicles
