This came from my local police department. Just wanted to share with you
all. Please be careful and don't fall victim to these criminals.
SCAM ALERT --
The U.S. Marshals Service is warning the public of a telephone scam
involving a fraudulent caller identifying themselves as a law enforcement
officer threatening arrest, and demanding payment of fines.
Recently, there were reported attempts of fraudulent callers who identified
themself as a Deputy United States Marshal (alternatively, the scammer may
identify themselves as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent - or other
law enforcement official). The phony law enforcement officer informs the
potential victim that arrest warrants were being issued for them or their
family members due to failure of appearance in court (or other such
"crimes"). The potential victims were then informed they could avoid arrest
by paying a fine through electronic fund transfer or cashier's check.
There are several variations on this theme - all of which involve demands
for money to resolve a criminal matter.
Scammers are known to "spoof" telephone numbers of law enforcement agencies
(i.e., appear on caller ID as if the call is originating from a legitimate
law enforcement agency) and research personal details (such as property
ownership, dates of birth, etc.) on potential victims to appear legitimate.
Law enforcement agencies do not seek payment of fines or fees via the
telephone for individuals with outstanding arrest warrants. Citizens should
not divulge personal or financial information to unknown callers.
If you believe you are a victim of fraud, report the incident through the
FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at
