Research Participation Request: Screen Readers and Braille Displays

The below research participant solicitation is being provided for
informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no
involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our
research mission.

Research Title: Screen Readers and Braille Displays

Being conducted by: Texas A&M University-Commerce

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to explore the process of using screen reader
software to complete computer-based tasks by experienced adult users who are
blind.

A case study methodology will be employed to examine the user experience in
context, in which participants will use their own technology to demonstrate
typical tasks. This exploratory study seeks to answer the following research
questions:

1. What preferences do participants exhibit in their use of screen reader
software and refreshable braille displays?

a. When there is more than one way to accomplish a task (e.g. open a given
software program using the Start Menu or a desktop shortcut), which option
do they choose and why?

b. If they have access to a refreshable braille display, for which tasks do
they use it? What are some examples of tasks for which they only use their
screen reader software?

2. What preferences do participants have related to screen reader and
refreshable braille display settings?

a. At what speed do participants prefer to listen to their screen reader?
Does this change depending on the task at hand?

b. What braille settings are selected in the screen reader software menu,
and how many braille cells do they have on their display?

3. What training opportunities and resources do screen reader users
regularly access?

a. What types of training opportunities have participants received for
screen reader and braille display instruction?

b. What resources are participants regularly accessing (e.g. online user
groups, software Help Menu, vendor training resources, friends or
colleagues)

c. What is an example of a recently learned new skill, setting, or option
that they now use regularly?

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

This study consists of two phases:

Phase One: Electronic screening survey, unlimited participants. Participants
who agree to be in this phase of the study will answer a series of questions
on a digital survey.

Phase Two: Individual case studies, 5-10 participants. Participants who
agree to be in this phase of the study will be contacted to participate in a
60-90 minute long videoconference session on Zoom, where they will answer
some interview questions and demonstrate use of screen reader software
(including any braille display use).

Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, Participants chosen to participate in phase two of the study will
receive a $25 gift card.

Dr. Belinda Rudinger (Texas A&M University-Commerce) is conducting a
research study to explore preferences and practices of adults using screen
reader software and refreshable braille displays. To be eligible, you must
be over 18 and a current screen reader user. This study consists of two
parts:

1. An initial screening survey

2. A follow up case study consisting of an interview and observation of your
