FCC Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking
Review of the Emergency Alert System

REVIEW OF THE EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM.  The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to get the public's input on proposed changes to rules governing the Emergency Alert System (EAS), to provide for alert messages using the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP).  CAP permits emergency alerts to be sent to users in voice; audio, or data files; images; and multilingual translations; and allows links to be sent that provide further information.  The FCC's Notice asks for comments on certain disability access issues in paragraphs 189-195.  This item has possible impacts for people with disabilities, especially for persons with vision and hearing disabilities.
