Position Open with Independence Now

Part-time Peer Support Counselor- Montgomery and Prince George's
Counties

Deadline to apply November 16, 2012- 5pm

Independence Now, a Center for Independent Living (CIL), is a nonprofit
organization created by and for people with disabilities. We are a
resource and advocacy center that promotes independent living and equal
access for people with all types of disabilities.  Independence Now
assists residents of Montgomery and Prince George's Counties to use
community services and resources that will enhance their independence.  

Independence Now's core services are peer counseling, individual and
systems advocacy, information and referral and independent living skills
training.   Our mission is to facilitate independent thought and action
by people with disabilities.  We promote the principle that each person
has value.  To this end, we provide the tools for individuals to develop
and discover their power to control their lives.

This position is part of Maryland's Money Follows the Person (MFP)
Program that supports people to move out of nursing facilities and into
the community.  It is imperative in this position to have a strong
belief in the independent living philosophy along with life experience
with disability and community living. The activities of a Peer Support
Counselor include building relationships with nursing facility staff and
residents, to act as a resource on local services and supports and the
transition process.  This position will also attend pertinent meetings
and events at nursing facilities in order to build connections.     

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

*        Manage a varied workload and maintain organized detailed
records 

*        Travel across the counties to visit various nursing facilities

*        Attend all trainings held for Peer Staff and organizational
staff meetings

*        Talk to nursing facility residents about living in the
community

*        Provide materials to residents as appropriate

*        Establish positive relationships with nursing facility staff,
residents and families

*        Provide information on the CIL and all other community
resources

*        Meet weekly for supervisory support with the MFP Project
Coordinator Report and submit all required tracking system data 

Requirements

Must have a disability and personal experience living in a nursing
facility. A College Degree is desired; work experience may be
substituted.   Background check required.   

Position details:  20 hours per week, $16/hour.  Minorities and
