The Saturday Technology Training Session for March 16 will focus on Employment for people with disabilities, and include presentations and discussion by Cecilia Tomney from the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, Edna Johnson from DC Rehabiltation Services, and Jonathan Cholet on legal internships.

Johnathan Cholet is a lawyer from Paris, France, who attended the Sorbone among other schools, and has just completed a year-long internship at the World Bank.  He will talk from his experience as a legal intern and a law school student.

Cecelia Tomney is a Careers Specialist at the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind and will talk about their programs and services related to employment, as well talk from her own experience about skills like interviewing and dressing for success, and will give some specific take-aways and advice for the job search.

Edna Johnson is program administrator for the Division Services for the Blind at DC Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) and will talk about how RSA can help you find employment.

Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind is dedicated to helping the blind or visually impaired population of the greater Washington region to remain independent, active and productive in society.
Their programs and services include training and consultation in assistive technology, employment marketing skills training, career placement services, comprehensive low vision care, and a wide range of counseling and rehabilitation services.  The Career Services department ensures that all consumers who are visually impaired or blind who want to be employed have the skills, resources and necessary training to help them obtain a job and achieve success in the workplace.
The various career programs and services include: Vocational Assessments, Employment Marketing Skills Training, Job Search and Placement Assistance, Job Retention and Coaching, and a Training Internship Program.

The Rehabilitation Services Administration is charged with delivering services to eligible clients under the Vocational Rehabilitation Program, a state and federal partnership helping persons with disabilities prepare for, gain, maintain, or regain employment. Additionally services are provided to help individuals with disabilities become more independent in the home or community.  Some of the Programs Offered are: District One Stop Locations, Independent Living, The Randolph Sheppard Vending Facility Program, and Supported Employment which assists VR clients who require on-going supports to maintain competitive employments have access to the services and support necessary to work in their communities.

Saturday Technology Training Sessions are an opportunity for members of the Adaptive Technology user community to get together and share information in an open environment.  Adaptive Technologies are broadly defined to include assistive software, hardware and systems (like screen readers, speech-to-text and video-relay-services that help people with disabilities get access to the library's programs and services), but also any procedure for success, like a job search strategy or any methodical approach to achieving a goal that important to participants.

Some examples of demonstrations and presentations from past sessions have included iPhone and iPad accessibility, captioned telephone, Deaf-Blind communications and technology, Job Search strategies, meditation, and laughter yoga.

The meetings take place on the first and third Saturdays of each month with a few exceptions for holidays. They are held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Adaptive Services Division, DC Public Library, Room 215, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St. N.W. Washington, DC 20001.  We are located between Gallery Place Chinatown and Metro Center on the Red Line. There is no public parking at the MLK Library.
