Keeping Seniors Safe
Keeping Seniors Safe (KSS) is a program that has been developed in conjunction with the Volunteer Resources Section of the Montgomery County Police Department. The KSS program was established to increase awareness of safety issues within the senior community and to provide guidance and resources to seniors in regard to these issues.

KSS program coordinator and KSS volunteers can attend your senior event or community meeting. They can speak on the following safety topics:

* Safe shopping habits and parking lot safety

* Home safety and personal preparedness for an emergency

* Fraud and scams

* Identity theft identification and prevention

* Who to call for emergency and non-emergency needs

A KSS team briefing generally lasts one hour, which includes time for audience questions and comments. The KSS team will also provide your group with additional senior safety resources and handouts.

Metro Offers Travel Training and System Orientation for People with Disabilities and Older Adults

Travel training for customers with disabilities as well as seniors--with or without disabilities--is offered at no cost to Metro customers. Travel training is short-term, comprehensive instruction designed to teach customers how to travel safely.

Another goal of travel training is to enable customers to travel independently using the accessible Metrobus and Metrorail systems. Through our Senior Outreach and Travel Training programs Metro sells Senior Smartrip(r) cards and offers free resources including:

* Tips for Riding Metro for Senior Citizens and People with or without Disabilities

* Accessible Options for People with Disabilities and Senior Citizens

Family Caregiver Survey
'Tis the season of giving and there is no greater example of genuine gifting than that of a family caregiver.

The Maryland Caregivers Support Coordinating Council (MCSCC) is still seeking family caregivers to complete an anonymous online survey. A family caregiver is someone who helps an adult or a child with a disability with personal care, household chores, money management, arranging for outside service arrangements, or visiting regularly to see how they are doing.

To be effective, we need your advice on the needs of family caregivers and the best ways to get these needs met. Anyone who is a family caregiver and is 18 years or older is welcome to participate in this survey. Please feel free to forward this invitation to your family, friends, and colleagues.
