Dear Community-Based-Organizations (CBOs):

The feedback you provided Metro earlier this year about your organization's use of paper farecards and bulk purchasing helped us with final preparations for going "paperless."

Metro has now begun its transition away from paper farecards. By January 2016, all Metro riders will need to use a SmarTrip<http://www.wmata.com/fares/smartrip/>(r) card, Metro's plastic, rechargeable card. We hope the information in this email will help answer any questions you have, and prepare you and your organization to become "paperless" with us!

If you would like to attend an information session on how to continue providing fare value to your clients, join us on Tuesday, December 15th, 2 - 4 PM at Metro headquarters, Lobby Meeting Room, 600 5th Street, NW, Washington DC, 20001. (Metrorail stations: Judiciary Square or Gallery Pl-Chinatown). Advanced registration is required: Seminar Registration<http://www.wmata.com/PaperlessSeminar>.

Metro's Elimination of Paper Farecard notices are available in eight languages: English<http://www.wmata.com/fares/FarecardElimination.pdf> | Spanish<http://www.wmata.com/fares/FE_Spanish.pdf> | French<http://www.wmata.com/fares/FE_French.pdf> | Chinese<http://www.wmata.com/fares/FE_Chinese.pdf> | Vietnamese<http://www.wmata.com/fares/FE_Vietnamese.pdf> | Arabic<http://www.wmata.com/fares/FE_Arabic.pdf> | Amharic<http://www.wmata.com/fares/FE_Amharic.pdf> | Korean<http://www.wmata.com/fares/FE_Korean.pdf>

I need to buy and manage Metro farecards in bulk for my organization/clients.
What are my options?

Option #1:
Keep it Simple

You can purchase SmarTrip(r) cards in bulk using the same process that you used for paper farecards -, through the mail<http://www.wmata.com/getting_around/visitor_info/> or by calling 202-962-5700. Please note, a $2 fee will be assessed for the cost of each SmarTrip(r) card; however, SmarTrip(r) card users do not have to pay the $1 per trip paper surcharge on Metrorail and receive free or discounted bus transfers. You can distribute the cards to individuals who will add more fare themselves and create a SmarTrip(r) account<https://smartrip.wmata.com/Account/Create> online for balance protection.

Option #2:
Use SmarTrip(r) Online and Save Money

This is a great option if you will "lend" SmarTrip(r) cards to your end users. After the initial purchase of the SmarTrip(r) cards, you can open a SmarTrip(r) account online and register<https://smartrip.wmata.com/Account/Create> each of the cards. Using a credit card, you can electronically add value to any of the registered cards. By using SmarTrip(r) cards you avoid the $2 SmarTrip card fee.

Option #3:
Use SmartBenefits(r) and Save Money

This is the best option if your clients already own SmarTrip(r) cards or if you intend to purchase a SmarTrip(r) card for them. You may already be familiar with SmartBenefits<http://www.wmata.com/business/employer_fare_program/faq_autoload.cfm>, a popular program in the area used by organizations to add value to their employee or clients' SmarTrip(r) cards. It supports multiple payment methods, including ACH, purchase orders and credit cards. By using SmarTrip cards you avoid the $2 SmarTrip(r) card fee.

What is a SmarTrip(r) card and how is it different from a paper farecard?

A SmarTrip(r) card is a permanent, rechargeable card that can be used on Metrorail, Metrobus AND local bus systems. A SmarTrip(r) card has a one-time cost of $2, but offers discounts not available for paper farecards and balance protection once a SmarTrip(r) account is established.
