Remote Work Draining Demand for Commuter Bus Service, Prompting Changes

The Maryland Transit Administration will hold five public hearings next
month to gather testimony about proposed Commuter Bus service changes. Some
of these changes may affect you if you rely on any of the state’s 36

MTA is considering the proposed changes due to a combination of budget
shortfalls and lack of ridership on some Commuter Bus routes. Average daily
ridership in the Commuter Bus system spiraled downward since the pandemic,
as more riders began working from home instead of traveling to offices
around the region. Ridership fell to 5,100 from its pre-pandemic average of
about 12,000.


MTA wants to discontinue service on eight Commuter Bus routes — including
route 203, which goes from Columbia to Bethesda. Another 26 routes would
see service changes, including several serving Montgomery County commuters:

   - Route 201 (Gaithersburg Park & Ride to BWI Marshall Airport)
   - Route 204 (Frederick to College Park)
   - Routes 305, 315, and 325 (Columbia & Silver Spring to Washington, D.C.)
   - Route 320 (Laurel to Baltimore)
   - Route 505 (Hagerstown to Shady Grove/Rock Spring)
   - Route 515 (Frederick to Shady Grove/Rock Spring)


If adopted, the proposed changes would take effect on July 1 this year.

Dress Warm:

   - Consider a windbreaker to cut sharp winds.
   - Always remember a hat and gloves!
   - Fleece-lined apparel is always a good idea.


Fuel Up:

   - Eat enough food to keep your body warm and energized!
   - Drink water before and after your journey.


Be Wary of Ice:

   - Bring a quick patch kit for any minor scratches or injuries.
   - Have an emergency contact on hand.
   - Check your tire pressure before every ride. Air pressure is lost more
   quickly in cold temperatures.


Be Mindful of Early Sunsets:

   - Wear high-visibility vests or clothing to help you be seen.
   - Be sure to install a light on your bike so you can see the road ahead
   of you!

Watch for Purple Line Lane Closures in Silver Spring

A long-term lane closure and new traffic setup began January 30 on Wayne
Avenue between Sligo Creek Parkway and Mansfield Road in Silver Spring.
This construction will impact both the Sligo Creek Trail and Sligo Cabin
Neighborhood Park. Watch for the trail detour, and note that the park's
parking lot will be closed during this time. Please pay attention to posted
signs for guidance. The construction work will take place between 7 a.m.
and 7 p.m. on weekdays and weekends as necessary for the next 12 months.


This closure will also affect Ride On bus routes 12, 15, and 19. Anticipate
potential service delays due to this construction activity.

Montgomery County Secures $87 Million for Transit and Pedestrian
Improvements

Exciting news for Montgomery County residents! County Executive Marc Elrich
announced that the Maryland Board of Public Works has approved over $87
million in funding for Montgomery County transportation projects. This
money will primarily go towards improving pedestrian safety and expanding
the Flash Bus Rapid Transit network across the county.


This is a big win for commuters. The Flash Bus Rapid Transit network is set
to grow with additional routes and stops. Plus, investments in pedestrian
safety infrastructure mean getting around without a car will be safer and
more accessible for everyone.
