Dear BlindShell Friends,

How was your summer? It always seems to pass far too quickly, doesn’t it? Let’s hope the coming autumn brings plenty of colorful leaves, sunny days, hot cocoa, and cozy scarves and sweaters.

We have some pretty cool news to share with you this month... but not so fast! First, let’s take a quick look at the latest BlindShell updates. But continue reading because we have some really exciting news to share with you all!

News, Updates, Apps

WhatsApp received an update to make sure everything continues running smoothly.

A scrolling issue in ScriptTalk has been fixed, so you should no longer miss content while moving through the screen.

The Quiz Game received several translation improvements.

Every update, big or small, helps make BlindShell a little easier and more enjoyable to use.

Did you know? Tips and Tricks

Do you ever worry that your BlindShell is completely dead, finished, finito... simply because it doesn’t start charging immediately? Don’t panic just yet.

If the battery has run completely empty, it can take a few minutes before the phone responds. Simply connect your BlindShell to the charger and give it a little time. A small red indicator light will let you know that charging has started, and after a while you should hear the startup melody.

If nothing seems to be happening, unplug the charger and connect it again. Sometimes the cable or charger simply wasn’t connected properly. Or maybe even check if you're using a cable that ends with a USB Type-A connector on the power adapter end and a USB Type-C connector on the phone end.

And One More Quick Tip….
Have you accidentally turned off the voice output on your BlindShell Classic 3? Don’t worry. You can turn it back on in just a few steps.

Here’s how:
1) Make sure your phone is turned on.
2) Increase the volume by pressing the top part of the volume button on the left side of the phone. You should hear audio feedback as you increase the volume.
3) Press and hold the Back button (the button with the red slash). The phone should vibrate and make a sound.
4) If nothing happens, your phone may be locked. Press and hold the Star key to unlock it.
5) Press and hold the Left Action button (the white dot in the top left).
6) While holding it, press the Confirm button (the green round button).
7) Press the Up arrow once, then press Confirm.
8) Press the Down arrow once, then press Confirm again.

And voilà! Your BlindShell should start talking to you again.

Behind the Scenes at BlindShell

Since we’re talking about simple fixes, we thought this would be the perfect time to introduce you to our BlindShell repair master, Jan!

Jan is the person who gets to investigate BlindShell phones that have stopped working properly. He finds out what went wrong, whether the phone can be repaired, and what needs to be done to get it working again. From simple fixes to more complicated repairs, he knows our phones inside and out.
Picture 1: Jan, BlindShell’s repair technician, sits at his workbench carefully repairing the electronics of a phone. In front of him are a circuit board and various repair and soldering tools. Above him are three orange icons representing cooperation, repair, and technology.

So, let’s get to know Jan and his work a little better!

Eliška: Hi Jan! How are you today? How long have you been part of the BlindShell team, and what does a typical day look like for you?
Jan: I’m good, thank you! This is my second year at BlindShell. A big part of my day is communicating with our partners about repairs, especially when we need approval for a paid repair. And, of course, I receive new phones for repair and work on the ones already waiting on my desk.
Eliška: You must have repaired quite a few phones by now. What are the most common problems you see?
Jan: Worn-out buttons are quite common, especially with customers who use their phones very actively. But unfortunately, there is a lot of accidental damage, such as cracked covers or water damage. Sometimes a phone has been placed on a wet surface or in spilled coffee. That can often be cleaned. If the phone actually falls into water, though, things can get much more complicated.
Eliška: Do you ever receive a phone that seems completely broken, only to discover that the problem is actually very simple?
Jan: Yes! I recently received a BlindShell Classic 3 that seemed completely dead. The display was off, and there was no sound. But the BlindShell Classic 3 allows you to turn off the display completely, and the sound had been turned off as well. So the phone was actually working perfectly.
If something seems wrong, it is worth checking the settings and the user manual first. And if you are unsure, contact our Customer Care team. Many problems that look like hardware failures can actually be solved over the phone.
Eliška: Have you had any repairs that really surprised you?
Jan: Sometimes a phone looks completely broken and will not even turn on, but the cause is just one component. I remember discovering that a faulty camera could prevent the entire phone from starting because of the phone’s protection system. Once we disconnected the damaged camera, the phone suddenly started working again. That was definitely an “aha!” moment.
Eliška: And now for a very important question. What should someone do if their BlindShell gets wet?
Jan: The first thing I would do is remove the battery immediately. Water can cause a short circuit, and if electricity continues flowing through the phone, some components can become permanently damaged.
After removing the battery, try to let the phone dry. I would not recommend taking the phone apart yourself unless you know what you are doing, as that requires the right tools and some experience.
Unfortunately, water damage can be serious. Some parts, such as the display, can be replaced, but if certain components on the main board are damaged, the phone may no longer be repairable.
Eliška: One last question. Is there anything you would like to wish our BlindShell users?
Jan: I hope they are happy with their phones, take good care of them, and most importantly, that their phones do not break and they never need to send them to me!
Eliška: I think that’s a wish we can all agree on! Thank you so much, Jan, and have a great day.

Big News: myIKONN Is Now Available on BlindShell!

IKONN and BlindShell logos beside an IKONN accessible measuring device and a golden sand BlindShell Classic 3, displayed together on an elegant black and beige background.
Attention, please! We have some exciting news to share before we go.

>From today, you can download the myIKONN app directly from the BlindShell App Catalog on your BlindShell Classic 2 or from the popular apps on your BlindShell Classic 3, and use it with the IKONN range of accessible products.

If you haven’t heard of IKONN before, let us introduce you. IKONN is a family of accessible household products developed in Denmark for everyday tasks, including kitchen and bathroom scales, thermometers, measuring tools and more.

Rather than building speech into every product separately, IKONN brings them all together through a single, consistent system. The products are designed to be easy to use for people with reduced vision, while looking and working like normal, stylish household products that fit naturally into any home or kitchen. Connect an IKONN product to the myIKONN app and measurements can be shown in a large, clear format or spoken aloud in many languages. The app also provides additional help and step-by-step instructions when you need them.

And now you can use that entire system directly from your BlindShell phone.

For example, connect a compatible IKONN kitchen scale to your BlindShell, place an ingredient on the scale, and hear the measurement read aloud immediately. From the app, you can select different ingredients and measure the volume of flour, rice, and more. Use the flexible tape measure for body measurements, clothing, and everyday measuring around the home.

It is a simple idea: one accessible system for a growing range of everyday products. But it can make tasks such as cooking, measuring, monitoring your health, and enjoying hobbies considerably easier to do independently.

Before we go…

…..Did you know that September 6 is Colour Blind Awareness Day?

The date celebrates the birthday of English scientist John Dalton, who published one of the first scientific studies on colour vision deficiency in 1794. Dalton and his brother both perceived colours differently, and naturally, he wanted to know why.

His theory? He thought the liquid inside his eyes might be blue and change the way he saw colours. He was so curious that he even asked for his eyes to be examined after his death!

Well... the liquid wasn't blue. But part of his eye tissue was preserved, and more than 150 years later, DNA analysis revealed that Dalton had deuteranopia, an inherited form of red-green colour vision deficiency.

His theory might have been wrong, but his curiosity helped us understand colour vision a little better. And we think that's pretty cool!
And that’s all from us for this month!
