Metro’s summer construction on the Red line is scheduled to conclude September 6. 

Since July 6, trains have not operated between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights, with free shuttle buses replacing train service at Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center and Bethesda stations. 

The construction includes a new mezzanine at Bethesda Station to connect with the future Purple Line, along with platform improvements at Grosvenor-Strathmore and maintenance along Rockville Pike/MD 355.

Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation will adjust 20 Ride On bus routes beginning September 6 to improve efficiency, service delivery and on-time performance. 

The changes also reflect the upcoming US 29 Flash Blue extension into Howard County, which begins September 8 and will provide public transportation connections between Montgomery and Howard counties. 

Two Ride On bus stops at Carroll Avenue and Maple Avenue will also be discontinued beginning September 6. The stops currently serve Routes 12,13,16,18 and 25, with alternate stops available at Carroll Street NW and Laurel Avenue or Takoma Station.

October is Walktober in Maryland, a month-long celebration of walking, rolling, pedestrian safety and active transportation.

Throughout the month, Marylanders are encouraged to get outside, get moving and discover more ways to walk and roll in their communities. Walktober also highlights the important role sidewalks, trails and shared-use paths play in connecting people to schools, jobs, transit, parks, businesses and one another.

Walk Maryland Day is Wednesday, Oct. 7. Residents can celebrate by joining an organized walking group or creating their own group with friends, family, neighbors or coworkers. Oct. 7 is also National Walk and Roll to School Day.

Walktober activities also include Walkinars, the Walktober Step Challenge and the Walktober Relay Challenge.

The Flash Blue Route will expand into Howard County beginning Tuesday, September 8, adding four new stops and creating a one-seat connection between Silver Spring, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and downtown Columbia. 

The Blue Route will continue to operate Monday through Friday every 15 to 20 minutes during the morning and afternoon peak hours. 

The expansion is a partnership between Montgomery and Howard counties that will provide commuters with more direct public transportation options between the two counties. 

The new service expands the reach of Montgomery County’s Flash Bus Rapid Transit network and strengthens connections to major employment and activity centers in the region. Have fun and discover more about family biking at the Montgomery County Family Bike Festival on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Rockville Town Center. The free event welcomes riders of all ages and is a chance to learn more about family biking, try out different types of bikes and enjoy activities with the kids.

Attendees can test ride e-bikes and cargo bikes on protected lanes around the Town Center, decorate bikes, take part in a balance bike parade and get bike safety checks from the Rockville Bike Hub.

The festival will also offer free children’s bike helmets and bike lights while supplies last, along with family biking advice from local advocates and information from state, county and city agencies.

Montgomery County’s annual bike drive will return October 16, providing an opportunity for residents to donate bicycles that can help connect people with reliable transportation. The bike collection event is in partnership with Rockville Bike Hub, whose volunteers inspect and refurbish the bikes. Residents can drop off gently used bikes on Friday, Oct. 16, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Montgomery County Council Office Building Parking Garage, located at the corner of E. Jefferson Street and Monroe Street in Rockville.

The annual bike drive is collecting child bikes, adult bikes, and bike parts. There is a particular need for 16-inch, 20-inch, and 24-inch children’s bikes this year. Donated bicycles should be in ready-to-ride condition.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is offering adult bicycle and e-scooter classes this fall to help residents build riding skills, confidence and safety awareness. 

Classes are provided through the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and are available for adults of all skill levels. 

September bike classes will be held in Rockville and Germantown, with an e-scooter class offered September 26 at Montgomery College in Rockville. MCDOT Expands Montgomery County’s Bicycle Network

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is advancing bicycle infrastructure projects in Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton to improve safety and strengthen connections to the county’s bikeway and transit networks. 

Projects currently under construction include portions of the Capital Crescent Train, Metropolitan Branch Trail and the McComas Avenue Neighborhood Greenway. 

Together, these projects will add more than two miles of bike pathways, while an additional 20 projects in planning and design are expected to add nearly 18 miles of bike-friendly pathways across the county. Montgomery County currently has 112 miles of bike lanes, bike friendly road shoulders and separated bike lanes. 

The expansion of the bicycle network will provide residents with safer, more connected options for biking and walking while supporting connections to transit, schools, jobs and local communities.

Montgomery County’s Vision Zero program has released its Fiscal Year 2027 Work Plan, outlining new projects and safety efforts designed to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on county roads. 

This year’s plan includes 13 bikeway projects under construction, 11 additional bikeways in design, and more than five miles of new sidewalks. The County will also improve pedestrian and bicycle connections to future Purple Line and Bus Rapid Transit stations. 

Safety efforts will also focus on high-risk roads, school areas and speeding. Montgomery County Police will expand traffic enforcement, including “speed on green” enforcement where permitted by state law. Safe Routes to School will also conduct walkability audits at 15 schools and hold at least 10 bike safety courses. 

Together, these projects and enforcement efforts are part of Montgomery County’s continued goal of creating safer, more connected streets for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
