Great news: congressional redistricting will be on your ballot this November.

Last month, the General Assembly convened in a special session to consider—and ultimately pass—a constitutional amendment on how congressional redistricting is handled in Maryland.

After a legal challenge by Republican lawmakers, we ultimately prevailed in a decision by the Supreme Court of Maryland.  That means that Question 3 will be on the ballot this fall so that Maryland voters can have the final say on the standards for congressional redistricting.

Tomorrow, join the Montgomery County Democratic Party for a unity rally.  Jamie Raskin and other Democratic candidates will kickoff the fall coordinated campaign.

Employer Registration for Paid Family and Medical Leave

Paid family and medical leave is coming to Maryland.  Starting January 2028, eligible employees will be able to take up to 12 weeks of paid, job-protected leave.  Employees will be able to welcome a new child, tend to a serious health condition, care for a loved one, or manage urgent family needs related to deployment—while still being paid up to $1,000 per week.

In preparation, employers with at least one employee in Maryland need to  <https://us.list-manage.com/SsDfJx2ryRK?e=d37a141d0c&c2id=be8fd84ee0d62d446b23e1d70665058d> register with the State.  Looking farther ahead, employers must begin withholding contributions via payroll deductions in the first pay period in January 2027, and the first contribution payment will be due April 30, 2027.  Job-protected, paid leave will become available to employees beginning in January 2028.

New MARC Train Service

Maryland will soon be offering direct commuter rail service between Montgomery County and Baltimore. Free Immunizations

It's getting to be that time year for COVID boosters and annual flu shots.  If you are uninsured or underinsured (individuals who have health insurance but their insurance doesn’t cover vaccines or who have a high copay for vaccines), you can receive free vaccinations from the State of Maryland.
