2013 STEM Conference Scholarship Stipend for Blind Students
Please share this with blind STEM students.
The Science and Engineering Division of the National Federation of the
Blind is now accepting scholarship applications for its STEM Conference
Scholarship Stipend. The Science and Engineering Division wishes to
encourage the success of blind STEM students in their chosen field of
study. We believe attending a technical conference in this field will help
the career of new blind professionals. Eligible candidates must be legally
blind and plan to attend a full time undergraduate or graduate program in
the United States in the fall of 2013. The field of study must be in
Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics. If the student has an
interest in attending a conference in a STEM field, then we encourage you
to apply for the STEM Conference Scholarship Stipend.
The STEM Conference Scholarship Stipend includes up to $1000 towards
conference expenses. When receiving the STEM Conference Scholarship, the
Science and Engineering Division requests receipts for the cost of the
conference and a 500 word essay. The essay should describe the conference
experience and how the conference will help the student in their
profession. After receiving the receipts for conference expenses and the
essay, the Science and Engineering Division will provide the stipend. The
Science and Engineering Division hopes to invite the stipend winner to the
next Science and Engineering Division meeting. The Science and Engineering
Division will provide up to $500 towards costs of attending the next
Science and Engineering Division meeting at the NFB national convention in
2014. The student will be invited to give a 10 minute talk about the
conference experience and their interest in STEM at the Science and
Engineering Division meeting.
We encourage you to select a conference that concludes by June 30, 2014.
If you do not have an exact conference selected, provide a list of
conferences from which you will be selecting.
You do not need to present at the conference in order to receive the
stipend.
The stipend is to help make it possible for you to attend a STEM conference.
In order to apply, write an essay describing the blindness techniques you
use to succeed in your chosen field, describe your interest in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics, and describe the conference you
wish to attend using the STEM Conference Scholarship Stipend. Tell us
about the nature of your blindness. Also tell us the location and date of
the conference you wish to attend.
Provide a copy of your college transcript and a letter of recommendation.
Provide your phone number and email the above information to John Miller at
johnmillerphd at hotmail.com<mailto:johnmillerphd at hotmail.com<johnmillerphd at hotmail.com>>
by September 1, 2013.
A complete application will also include a phone conversation with John
Miller by September 7, 2013.
We hope you take advantage of this exciting opportunity.
John Miller, president
Science and Engineering Division
of the National Federation of the Blind
