Open Lab At SSB Resource Center

The Technology Resource Center at SSB's 2200 office has a vast array of assistive devices and computer systems for our customers. Some of the equipment available to use at the resource center includes CCTVs, handheld video magnifiers, braille displays, standalone portable reading systems, and PC and Mac workstations.

We host staff-assisted Open Lab hours every Tuesday from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM and every Thursday from 12:30 - 3:30 PM for individuals who are interested in using workstations setup with low vision, blindness and DeafBlind technology. Staff will be on hand to provide basic instruction for getting started using Resource Center workstations, basic troubleshooting and advice on using or purchasing assistive technology. The Communication Center and the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library have launched one toll-free number (1-800-722-0550) for customers to call to reach either location. Staff at both locations will be available to provide one-stop customer service for the library and Communication Center, immediately answering basic questions and conferencing in subject matter experts as needed.

Our Communication Center can still be reached directly at 651-539-2363. We will be discontinuing the analog equipment number 651-642-0885.

Coffee House Press Makes Titles Accessible

Minnesota-based Coffee House Press now has more than 80 titles available in screen-reader friendly electronic format.
Inspired by a regular reader who is visually impaired, and funded through a grant from VSA Minnesota, Minneapolis-based Coffee House Press now has more than 80 of its titles available in a structured e-text format that can be easily read with screen readers.
"Access has long been a core value of Coffee House Press," publisher Chris Fischbach said, "and we have been looking for more and more ways to make our books accessible to readers. This initiative is another way we can do that."
"We realized that accessible electronic formats would give readers using screen reading software access to important formatting information," said Julie Strand, Development Manager at Coffee House Press, "such as line breaks in poetry, or text placement in experimental fiction."
