September 2022 At Large Chapter Minutes
The At Large Chapter of the National Federation
of the Blind of Minnesota was called to order by
President Dave Andrews at 7:05 PM on 09/18/2022
Minutes from meeting on 08/21/2022 were approved as amended.
Jessie Sherick of the NFB National office, joined
the meeting to deliver a presentation to the
chapter on NFB News Line, a braille and audio
information service for individuals who are blind
which includes newspapers, magazines, and other
information. He also demonstrated the touchtone
telephone access method and provided an
explanation of others, including the mobile
application and the Amazon Echo skill available
for the service. The service includes hundreds of
publications in multiple areas, as well as at
least two newspapers from each state. Minnesotas Publications include:
Ø Associated Press Minnesota
Ø Duluth News Tribune
Ø Forum of Fargo Moorhead
Ø Minneapolis Star Tribune
Ø Rochester Post Bulletin
Ø Saint Cloud Times
Ø Saint Paul Pioneer Press
Dave also announced that at least one additional
newspaper will soon be added from Minnesota, and
it is likely to be the Faribault Daily News.
Rocky Hart publicly thanked Jessie and all other
NFB staff responsible for the coordination of
News Line for providing this invaluable service
to individuals who are blind, citing his own use
of the service for over eleven years and the
massive expansion of the service over time.
Gail Gruber-Bengtston asked whether NFB News Line
offered any publications relevant to individuals
with Diabetes. Jessie answered that there are several publications available.
Jeff Kubas indicated he was looking for Russian
newspapers focused in the current conflict in
Ukraine and was unable to access this
information. Jessie indicated that no information
has been available to News Line from Russian Newspapers regarding this.
Rocky Hart also asked about the ESPN On-line
newspaper, which has not offered content since
July. Jessie indicated that no information has
been forwarded since then, and encouraged
individuals who are blind to contact customer
service for this paper. Chapter members also
asked several other questions regarding News Line
which Jessie and Dave were able to answer.
Other Business:
NFB of MN President Steve Jacobson joined the
meeting to provided an update on happenings within the affiliate.
Walk for Opportunity held on September 10 raised over $5,100.
NFB of MN State Convention is to be held November
4-06 in Bloomington, MN. Rob asked when
registration will open for the convention. Steve
answered that this is yet to be determined due to
logistical issues but that more information will
be forthcoming shortly. Rob also asked about
financial assistance for the convention, and
Steve answered that he could contact the affiliate regarding this.
