Hi there, Brian,
My spouse is the music director at the church we attend. I am only 
the banjo player/guitarist/penny whistler/whatever is needed, but  I 
pretty much know what he does and where he gets his resources.  He 
uses lots of on-line databases and lots of notes from previous years 
and lists of songs the band and the congregation know and like.  I'd 
be happy to chat off-list if  you have other questions.
