[musictlk] Piano questions..?

Hi Joseph,

Braille Music is extremely beneficial if you know it. However, as a
music major in piano lessons I typically have my instructor record in
three steps:
1. Record the left hand.
2. Record the right hand.
3. Record together so you know how the piece is supposed to sound like.
These all don't have to be separate files, they could be the same one
with just a few seconds in between each take. You could memorize or
write down the starting points for the right hand and the full piece.
If you have a decent recording device it should be able to pick up
some of the nuances, but it is always a good idea to have the
instructor describe dynamic markings as they go. A good strategy for
this is to take the few seconds between hand recordings or at the very
end of the file to have your instructor give you dynamic tips like,
"There's a crescendo at measure 8, and you decrescendo after measure
12." That way you get all the details.

I'd highly recommend learning braille music though. Recordings are
great, and it's awesome that some instructors are willing to be so
verbally descriptive, but braille gives you concrete solid notes to go
by. I like to use a combination of recordings and braille.
Recordings help me learn music more quickly, but I can use the music
to correct any notes I may have heard incorrectly, remind myself of
articulations, etc.

HTH.
