I've never had a problem in laying black keys with my thumb or pinky. I
haven't played piano in a few years, but it just took time and practice to
do it.

Subject: [musictlk] piano question

Hello,
I am not taking piano lessons right now, but I'd like to get back
into playing at least some. However, I have a question for
experienced piano players. In a piece when it is necessary to
use your thumb or pinky to play a chord containing a black key,
how do you comfortably play these notes? I try to come up with an
alternative fingering whenever possible, but if that's not
possible, are there techniques I can try in terms of hand
position, finger placement, etc to make it more comfortable to
play black keys with your thumb or pinky? I've heard of moving
your hand further away from the edge of the keys, but are there
other techniques that have worked for you?
Thank you,
Kelsey Nicolay
