When you first learn to play by ear you have to know where you are in the
scales and learn your signatures well.  When you transpose you carry it a
step further and understand the relationship in the new key you mojulate to.
Jazz musicians regularly transpose all the time also arrangers do too
forinstance when you write for French horn or English horn there are in the
key of f.  Saxophones such as alto and baritone are in the key of e-flat.
Tenor soporano and bass saxophones are in b-flat.
