Hi Bill,
As an accomplished saxophone player you have an advantage because you have a trained ear.
It’s simply takes practice to land on the right fret.
Usually you will find that you are only off a fret or so.

I used to have a problem with this myself.
With some practice and a little patience you will find that you will overcome this very easily.
