Hi Mary Ellen,
Thanks so much. I already get that one, thankfully. I love it. 

I'm just now starting to think seriously about seeing what the freelance writing business is like. I've gone from hardly being able to put two decent English sentences together as a notoriously bad computer programmer writes, to being able to publish internal articles that I have given to our internal writing staff to proof, and they have come back multiple times and said that all they had to do was change a very few words, and a few visual things, so I'm trying to take the next step and learn what writers do daily, how they run the business part of things, and whatever else I can pick up, to see if I may be the right kind of person for this.

Writing for Dollars is quite good.  It includes a short article with tips
for writers and a list of several paying markets.  The publications are
grouped into "high", over $500); medium, (between $150 and $500); and low,
under $150.  Topics for these publications vary widely, from social issues
to food and travel publications.  I saw one for people in the construction
industry.

Another worthwhile resource book is a book I found on BARD called "The Well
Fed Writer."  It talks about how to become a freelance commercial writer.
The author's premise is that writers learn how to create copy for a wide
variety of commercial entities, from banks to dog groomers.  Coincidentally,
last week I met a man who regularly produces written information concerning
the bumpers they put in parking lots to keep cars from driving onto the
sidewalk or into buildings.  He says he writes something on the topic about
three times a week.  Either he's an extremely creative writer or there's
much more to the topic than I could ever have imagined.  One thing is
certain.  Anyone who can make parking lot bumpers sound interesting has
learned to be a good writer.

I'm exploring freelance writing as a part-time business. To prepare for the
possibility of doing this, I signed up for a class called Writing For Fun
and Profit from http://www.vu.org. My memory tells me that there are writers
among us. One of my assignments is to sign up for ten writing newsletters.
Do you know of any good ones to sign up for?

And while I'm at it, if you are a writer, would you like to talk to me about
what it is like to be a writer?
