You need certification fro the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. You can find information on both the NFB and NLS websites.

You will not get rich in this field. It is hard to make a full-time living transcribing from home.

You need a lot of computer background. Additional certification, especially in Nemeth, will increase your chances of getting a job and getting paid more for your work.

Subject: [nabop] career information

good morning. i graduated from college last year. I am totally blind and would like information about Braille transcription and proofreading careers. What do i need to do to get certified? What equipment is required? I would also like information about other transcription careers. my bachelor's degree is in general studies. Would the salary for these careers be enough to provide for my two children/ I live in a small town north of Amarillo Texas. Could I find employment in one of these careers where i live? Thank you.
     Sarah
