Joseph,

Probably not particularly relevant, but I just had to respond to your
comment. I couldn't resist the bate man, so forgive the tech talk. LOL
I've quoted you below, then responded to your comment.

Mailman actually isn't a bad piece of software in my experience.
However, that damn qrunner model it uses just sucks,
especially in versions before 2.1 or so. It was done that way to reduce
the load Mailman places on a system, but the problem is it results in
things like delayed posts, delayed answering of requests, etc. etc.
etc.. It isn't supposed to delay more than a minute or so, but in my
experience it does. In older versions, the master qrunner process would
sometimes die too, taking the entire listserve down with it. How
irritating. I've noticed newer versions tend to be better about that.

As it happens I figured out two ways to prevent that particular problem.
One of them makes Mailman positively snappy when dealing with requests.
If there are any Mailman users out there who are interested, talk to me
off list and I'll explain how I did it. I guess this isn't the place for it.

I have worked with a couple mailing list managers that do perform better
than Mailman and are a bit more reliable. I found ezmlm and ezmlm-idx to
be higher performing, and couriermlm wasn't bad either though I didn't
work with it much. The trouble is, none of them were as user friendly,
and none had that nice web interface for list owners and moderators that
Mailman has. Also, they aren't MTA agnostic the way Mailman is. ezmlm
and ezmlm-idx work only with qmail, and couriermlm works only with
Courier. That means they're probably not a good choice in most
situations. Personally, I use Mailman with a couple deviations from the
standard setup which get me around its shortcomings.

Alright, stepping down off the soap box now. I'll now assume the role of
quiet list observer once more.
Joe
