[nabs-l] JAWS problem with new laptop

Duplicates are caused either by the sender having the same message go
out with different Message-Id: headers (one of the hidden headers on
an email that you don’t normally see with most mail programs) or by
the list software thinking it hasn’t yet successfully sent you a copy
of the message and trying again.

The latter appears to have happened in the case of William’s message,
so it’s not his doing.

Gmail and a few other services will not save duplicate messages that
have the same Message-Id:, which cuts down on duplicates from mailing
lists a lot. This is a problem, however, because sometimes two
messages can show up with the same Message-Id: that are not actually
the same message. In theory, that never happens. In practice,
however, it does.

In fact, it happens every time you send someone an email whilst also
sending it to a mailing list to which they subscribe. They ought to
get a copy of the message from each, but the message will have the
same Message-Id: from both sources. Just that one message will pass
through the mailing list software and be altered by it—list footer
and additional headers added, that sort of things.

I actually go to significant lengths to ensure that Gmail does not
see a copy of messages I send to the list before they come back to it
from the list. If I didn’t, I’d never know if my own messages were
reaching the list or not because the list’s copy would be considered
a duplicate and casually deleted. It’s quite annoying.

It ended up sending the message multiple times. You are not the first to expearience this within the past few days. Sorry about this.
