I just use goldwave. I take a song, find where I want and set the 
markers, then cut it out. Then I can trim it out and fade the beginning 
1 second in and fade out the last 2 and change the volume. It's a bit of 
a pain because you need to import it into ITunes, find it in your media 
library and change it to m4r after you convert to AAC, then reimport. 
Takes about a minute. I've not found any kind of ringtone maker that 
works as well.
