Hi Roanna and all,
The reason why blind people place so much emphasis on independent
living skills is because we often lack them. I know this is true
for me, and probably for others as well. I've lived a relatively
sheltered life. My parents had done a lot for me, such as
cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, etc. Sighted children can
learn to do these things by watching their parents, but that
doesn't work for us. Besides, some techniques that work great for
sighties don't work for us. That's why it's important that we go
to train centers like LCB and CCB to learn nonvisual independent
living skills. And like RJ said, having these skills can lead to
more positive college and employment experiences.

First, and formost, you'd have a better chance of gaining and
maintaining
employment. RJ

Dear Students,
I hope everyone had a wonderful time at this year's national
convention.
I'd like to discuss the topic of independent living skills. As
students
we are sometimes not expected to perform as people think we
should. Last
week my dad and I went to Subway so I could get some lunch
before my exam.
I independently ordered my own sandwich which was turkey with
mustard
American cheese and tomatoes on Italian bread. In the past I
have been
heating up my own food in the microwave. Why do you think
learning
independent living skills is important? Hope to hear from you
soon.
