Peter,

While I agree with some of your points such as the value of starting 
businesses, to devalue the  benefits of going to college on a student list 
is wrong. True college degrees at the undergrad level are not as significant 
as they once were, but they still help you obtain and maintain employment.
I certainly agree that the economic situation makes times uncertain, but 
working for others is still feasible. I see no stats proving the economic 
downturn produces a rise in business ownership.

I saw no harm in Helga's post either since we also have job announcements. 
But we need to respect the leader's decision.

An alternative to posting your announcements of networking meetings here 
might be to put a brief message on what you are doing; like a sentence or 
two at the end of your posts and invite people to learn more by visiting 
your facebook page or live journal page or some social network site.
So, I hope you can move on and not be so negative. We have a wide variety of 
topics here which is great, but not self promotion.

I also suggest that if you are so passionate, peter, that you start your own 
list serv for such topics.

Good afternoon again everyone,

    Here we are trying to promote independence and self-sufficiency for the
blind and those attempting to do just that get slammed for sharing a way for
those that choose to participate to achieve these goals. The very
organization that is supposed to be promoting independence and self
sufficiency among the blind is to thank for squelching such efforts
undertaken by blind individuals and continuing to promote continued
dependency on Governmental programs. This is very wrong!

    If getting involved in a networking business allows one to raise money
to fund one's education they should be permitted to invite others to learn
about it. With the increasing number of sighted students seeking to create
multiple income sources blind students need to do the same. I have seen this
happen on a number of NFB Lists including the Blind Entrepreneur's List and
strongly urge NABS and our other affiliates to stop it!If raising awareness
about becoming an entrepreneur, developing a business opportunity, and
inviting others to do the same will mean that a blind student can persue the
career of their choice without any involvement by a state VR agency they
need to know that such opportunities are available to them. If building a
network business would enable a blind student to fund training at an NFB
Center they need to know how to do so. If having a large number of blind
students involved in network marketing will mean substantial increases to
the PAC Plan, increased funding for NABS, new NFB Scholarships, a decrease
in the number of unemployed blind persons, the creation of a 24-hour
broadcast service that carries information of interest to the blind that
does not extract funds from other NFB activities and programs, there needs
to be large numbers of blind entrepreneurs in our ranks building networking
and other businesses. The time is now. Also let's not forget that some of us
go to college to study Business Administration and other business-related
courses. For these reasons a discussion of such opportunities is very
appropriate for this and other employment-related NFB Lists.

    We have been around professional networking since 1977 and know first
hand about the blind gentleman who achieved a high level of success in a
networking business long before the many technological advances available to
us today were around. Other blind individuals need to learn of his success
and follow in his lead in large numbers to spread the wealth around and put
a big dent in the unemployment of the blind by being job creators not just
job seekers.
