I'm experiencing the same thing. I've found that sometimes using ear plugs
works better, but that is not always possible. Can anyone enlighten us?
Justin.

Subject: [nabs-l] Using the iPhone Keypad During a Call
Hi All,
Whenever I am in the middle of acall and am required to enter a code, for
entering a conference call for instance, the phone repeatedly switches from
the speaker to the earpiece and back even if one is holding the phone in the
very same position. As a result, while one is entering the code, the speaker
mode automatically gets deactivated, thereby making it impossible to enter
the code. What can one do to grapple with this situation?
Best,
Rahul
