Hey Tar!

Thanks for posting to the list. I can address some of your questions
below, and also encourage you to reach out to Bryan Duarte at
bjduarte at asu.edu for mysql and sql advice.

In terms of accessibility of both SAS and R, I have had great success using
both software. SAS is very user friendly, particularly the most recent
version of SAS Studio. I interned with SAS last summer and each day,
literally, there are new accessibility features that allow for universal use
by print-disabled users. Most notably, snippets are easily accessed through
the SAS Studio platform, allowing for ease of use and swiftness when
producing programs. R is great, except that the data input is limited, yet
not to any extent that would interfere with courses in college. R has a
Braille package that can be freely installed to the terminal called
BrailleR. I have used this software extensively in courses and research and
find the accompanying package beneficial when analyzing data, regardless of
size. R and SAS, I've found, are easier to use with screen readers such as
JAWS and NVDA, rather than Voiceover, though others may have differing
opinions.

Android applications seem simple to create with screenreaders, particularly
if using Eclipse as an IDE, yet I have not personally programmed one myself.
I've looked into the accessibility of performing such tasks, and found many
resources to guide one through the process. Eclipse, however, I have used
for C++ and found it accessible with JAWS. I am more than happy to dig
deeper into my findings if you are interested

Hope some of this helps!

Best,
Kathryn

Subject: [nabs-l] new to list: some questions about computer
science/engineering

Hello,

I've actually been part of this list before, but it was a while ago, maybe
seven years, so I'm gack in school and have some more questions. I'm
basically totally blind and going for my Master's in Bioinformatics and
Biomedical Engineering and I'm taking many statistics computer science
courses so have specific questions about them:

*Do you all know if SAS statistics software is accessible with a screen
reader, or do you all know of an accessible alternative, such as AR (I've
heard is accessible but not sure)?

*Has anyone worked with a screen reader and Android Studio or Eclipse to
make Android apps? Or, basically, I'm looking for any Android accessibility
tips.

*Also, any accessibility tips for Raspberry Pi or Internet of Things type
access is what I'm seeking.

*Lastly, any mysql or sql advice? I'm still in the process of downloading
correct software, the workbench along with the main mysql installer program.
Have any of you used with screen reader?
Basically, I'm wishing to talk with any blind visually impaired who are in
this field. Have you found any of the curriculum specifically challenging
accessiblitywise? I try to prepare in advance before class, but I've always
found this difficult since each instructor is different and it's hard to
know what he/she will use in class, which software/hardware, how he/she will
prepare quizzes/tests, etc.
You can reply to me either through the listserv or privately at

Thanks for all your help
