[nabs-l] Accessible Music Reading and Writing Software

Hi Rilind,

I noticed no one responded to your question yesterday. I would
suggest that your friend use a program called Lime Allowed (not
sure if I spelled that correctly,) which is actually a program
exclusively for blind musicians. It was created by a company
called Dancing Dots, an organization founded by Bill McCann, a
blind trumpet player about twenty-five years ago. His mission in
creating the company was to make both reading and writing music
accessible to the blind. Being a musician myself, I also know
him very well. I don't have the link to download the program
(Lime Allowed, but I suggest your friend contact Bill at:
info at dancingdots.com

If your friend has an embosser, he can also directly transcribe
print music into Braille using his embosser and an application
called GdField, which Lime uses to create Braille music and which
I also believe was created by Dancing Dots. Both of these
programs work with Windows, and as far as
I know don't with Apple products.

I hope this helps.

Sami

Subject: [nabs-l] Accessible Music Reading and Writing Software

Hello.
I'm emailing to ask for some help for a friend who requested I
find some info.
A friend of mine who is also blind, and uses both Voiceover and
JAWS is looking in to taking a degree in Music. As part of his
decision making he is trying to find out how to use music
programs for writing and reading music. He's tried Finale but
wasn't able to yet learn this.
What programs, that are accessible on Windows with JAWS and NVDA,
or mac with voiceover, Android, or IOS exist that could be used
for both reading as well as writing music? Also, do you know of
any guides to using the program that would help?
Any help is appreciated:
Thanks:
Rilind.

P.S. My friend is also opening to discussing with someone
further, mentorship, or discussion as well so if you are open to
this you can also message me off list if it's okay for him to
contact you.

Tonight's NABS Membership Call!

Hey NABS:

We hope you're having a great long Memorial Day weekend and an
exciting
start to your summer! For those of us in the Federation, summer
means more
than sleeping in and having fun in the sun. It also means that
we can look
forward to joining our fellow Federationists at our annual
"family
reunion"-the national convention of the National Federation of
the Blind, to
be held this year in Orlando July 10-15. This convention is
particularly
special for NABS, as it marks our 50th anniversary! To celebrate
this
milestone, we have a lot of awesome events-at least one during
every day of
convention! Want a sneak peek at all the festivities? You'll get
it tonight
on our May membership call!

The fun starts tonight at 7:00 PM Eastern on our NABS conference
line. To
join in, call (712) 770-5197, and enter access code 265669. We
hope you'll
join us as we get pumped for our 50th anniversary celebrations!

Happy summer,

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not
the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we
raise
expectations for blind people, because low expectations create
obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you
want;
blindness is not what holds you bak.

It's supposed to come out around June 1, but I'm not sure exactly
when. And remember, times are not technically set in stone until
shortly before the convention. So everything is subject to
change a little bit.

Hi all,
I am a Junior in High School, and am researching different
college Disability Services offices. I have been reading a lot
on their sites, and I understand that they determine whether an
Accommodation is reasonable. I am very curious about this. I
would think that DSS employees probably do not have a lot of
training in blindness? As long as you present good documentation
of your blindness and explain logically why you need an
accommodation, have you found that they listen to you? I just
noticed that two out of the three websites I have been looking at
say that faculty should discuss concerns with DSS before
involving the student. This is just a curiosity thing, not a
question that is urgent. I just wanted to here people?s
thoughts.
Best,
Mikayla

I can only go with my experience while in college. I used my
disability services to scan textbooks for me that I bought and
gave
them. In those days I was given my textbooks on mp3 cds. I
found my
DS office very helpful. They bnew about screenreaders like jaws.
There was an assistive technology room in the college library
with a
computer with jaws that I could use to help me with school
assignments. Good luck. I'd also make sure you also spoke to
your
professors and let them know of any acomidations that you might
need.
I'm very surprised thatity office would go to the teachers before
consulting the student that needed the help from them. Have a
great
day.

Hi Mikayla,
I go to a smaller school and applied for Disability Services
during the summer. In the form, I had to specify my
accmmodations. Some of these accommodations were originally not
given to me, but I had a meeting with them (in the middle of the
summer) to clarify things with them. Since they hadn't worked
with a totally blind student before, and understood what I needed
them for after the meeting, they were much more willing to
utilize most of them. For example, they were unsure what the
purpose of me needing an I-Phone for exams was, but when they saw
it connects to my braillenote, they granted it. Similarly, the
use of talking to professors about modifying assignments which
are too visual.
Also, if you are clear on what you need, you could make things
better for future blind students. My DSS didn't know what a
Perkins Brailler was, but when they saw the one I used (which I
had gotten from rehab), they brought one, for myself and any
other future blind students.

Hi, at my school there was an ACT/SAT prep class, also I found
practice materials online. Good luck studying!

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not
the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we
raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations
create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can

Hi Ahbee,

Larger schools will typically have prep classes. There are apps
that
you can get for your phone, but the math questions are generally
not
accessible. You can use the "free rice" website, which I love.
They
have an SAT prep category. There are, of course, online prep
materials. There are also books on bookshare and prep books that
you
should be able to get in hard copy Braille.

I also want to remind you that getting into college is certainly
not
all about test scores. If it was, I owd not have gotten into
Stanford
or anywhere else to be perfectly honest. My SAT scores were
absolutely
terrible, and I haven't passed many AP exams either. So while I
certainly advocate studying up for those tests, don't think that
a bad
score or two is the end all of end alls.

Also, I really do think it's important to take each test that
you're
planning to take twice. The first time, it's just a good idea to
get a
feel for the test layout, types of questions, etc. When I retook
the
SAT, I did much better (though still not nearly as well as I
would
have liked) on it, and even though I had to pay for my second
test, I
thought it was worth it. I also want to just take a quick minute
to
remind you that you will likely not be testing with all the other
students. Instead, it will probably be proctored for you
individually
at school, during a school day so that you receive your testing
accommodations, as prescribed by the College Board accommodations
letter you should have already gotten. Hope this helps!

Best,

Hi Mikayla,

I think this varies by school, but at the ones I've attended,
there is a standard list of accommodations, and you just tell
them which one's you need. Beyond proving that you had a
disability, you didn't have to do anything to show that you
needed a particular accommodation, but it might be different if
you wanted something strange like more than the standard amount
of extended test time or something. I'm not sure what the thing
about instructors going to the office rather than the student is,
but since you don't have to disclose what disability you have
that makes you need an accommodation, maybe it's designed to
protect people (especially those with invisible disabilities)
from awkward questions from professors.

Best,
Karl

Hi all,
I am a Junior in High School, and am researching different
college Disability Services offices. I have been reading a lot
on
their sites, and I understand that they determine whether an
Accommodation is reasonable.
I just wanted to here people??
thoughts.
Best,
Mikayla

No, I took an SAT prep course that was not offered at my school
it was a little bit expensive but if you are interested I will
give you the details. The course I took in the company they were
the best company and they really care about visually impaired
persons. They gave me all the materials in accessible format.

Hi Ahbee,
Please keep in mind that I applied for Fall 2013 admission so I
am I
guess getting a bit old for this college admission game...
I did take both the SAT and ACT and did self-study for the most
part.
I've only gotten a few sessions of writing tutor and math tutor.

I scored 1950/2400 (back then the SAT was on 2400) and 32/36 on
the
ACT. I took SAT subject tests for world history, chemistry, and
U.S.
history but I honestly don't remember those scores. None of them
were
800 though. Probably somewhere between 650-750. I ended up
attending
UCLA.
I am disclosing my scores publicly because well those scores
don't
mean much anymore at this point as a college senior... and also
to
share that test scores are not everything as Cricket mentioned.

It is natural for you to feel anxious about college admission
process
and taking these tests but in the end colleges are reviewing each
student holistically so they definitely want more than perfect
high
school GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

Cheers,
Miso

OK here we go The company is Veritas Prep and I really like their
course because like I said I got accessible materials they have
both test prep act and SAT The price is about $695 for a five
week course which includes also office hours after class to
clarify content I know this may be beyond some people's financial
budget, but I got my department a vocational rehabilitation to
pay for this. Do not if you do anything go with Kaplan,
Princeton review, They do not care about accessibility, and will
not give you things in accessible material. So a free trial
class that you may try if you type in it in Google search. They
also use adobe connect, and for screen reader users I would
recommend using Microsoft edge and windows 10 or Internet explore
this works best with the client. Also, I had read a Pearson as
an instructor, and Jeffrey as an instructor. Also I'm not afraid
to show my scores because I'm very proud of them. Without this
course, I would not of been able to get the score that I got.
The first time I took the test I got a 610, and when I got my
results back this year I took it again and got an 850.

I've only gotten a few sessions of writing tutor and math tutor.

I scored 1950/2400 (back then the SAT was on 2400) and 32/36 on

 UCLA.
I am disclosing my scores publicly because well those scores
don't

It is natural for you to feel anxious about college admission

Hi Ahbee,
I've taken the SAT once and I got a 1130. I am going to take it
twice
more. I I went to a prep class outside of school. Also, I did a
prep
class in school and I had tutoring outside of school.

Taylor,
Interesting; I have not heard of a company being real
accomodating before.
Was your course online? What format was it and what software was
used? Adobe
connect is a common meeting platform but is only semi accessible
to screen
readers.

OK here we go The company is Veritas Prep and I really like their
course
because like I said I got accessible materials they have both
test prep act
and SAT The price is about $695 for a five week course which
includes also
office hours after class to clarify content I know this may be
beyond some
people's financial budget, but I got my department a vocational
rehabilitation to pay for this. Do not if you do anything go
with Kaplan,
Princeton review, They do not care about accessibility, and will
not give
you things in accessible material. So a free trial class that
you may try if
you type in it in Google search. They also use adobe connect,
and for
screen reader users I would recommend using Microsoft edge and
windows 10 or
Internet explore this works best with the client. Also, I had
read a
Pearson as an instructor, and Jeffrey as an instructor. Also I'm
not afraid
to show my scores because I'm very proud of them. Without this
course, I
would not of been able to get the score that I got. The first
time I took
the test I got a 610, and when I got my results back this year I
took it
again and got an 850.

None of
them were
800 though. Probably somewhere between 650-750. I ended up
attending
 UCLA.
I am disclosing my scores publicly because well those scores
don't
mean much anymore at this point as a college senior... and also
to
share that test scores are not everything as Cricket mentioned.

It is natural for you to feel anxious about college admission
process
and taking these tests but in the end colleges are reviewing
each
student holistically so they definitely want more than perfect
high
 school GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

 Cheers,
 Miso

They
have an SAT prep category. There are, of course, online prep
materials. There are also books on bookshare and prep books
that you
should be able to get in hard copy Braille.

The first time, it's just a good idea
to get a
feel for the test layout, types of questions, etc. When I
retook the
SAT, I did much better (though still not nearly as well as I
would
have liked) on it, and even though I had to pay for my second
test, I
thought it was worth it. I also want to just take a quick
minute to
remind you that you will likely not be testing with all the
other
students. Instead, it will probably be proctored for you
individually
at school, during a school day so that you receive your testing
accommodations, as prescribed by the College Board
accommodations
letter you should have already gotten. Hope this helps!
