Hi Emma,
I just wanted to add to the really great responses you've already 
received.  I can't tell 100% if you're saying that these thefts 
are from people you know or if they are occurring while you are 
out and about.  Either way, I've had great luck carrying handbags 
with one major zipper area.  The trick is to always have your bag 
zipped and be aware of the zipper by either tucking it under your 
arm or putting your hand over it.  I'd even consider putting it 
between your back and the back of your wheelchair if the bag is 
small/soft enough.  I never leave my bag out of sight using the 
same tactics that many on this list use (keeping a body part 
attached to the bag, but just remember that you really need to be 
aware of the zipper more than anything).
