Many of the schools and programs who train dogs for people with  
medical needs such as diabetes train mostly response dogs.  This dog  
may not alert, however during a medical event, the dog may do things  
such as dial a phone to get help, bring the handler water or juice or  
medication, open the door for EMTs, etc.  A dog can respond without  
alerting and most of the dogs trained by these programs seem to be  
response dogs.  Once they bond with their handler, they or may not  
engage in alerting behavior.
