Deanna,
I have found that a prong collar when properly used can be a very effective tool, for me.
I have a semi stubborn male GSD and a standard check collar takes about a "what I would call" a level 7 correction to get his attention, with the prong, that 7 turns in to about a 2. It makes leash corrections much more discrete and in fact, just having it on him, tunes him down a couple of notches, often times I put it on him and I then connect my leash to his nylon collar.
I think it works as a kind of governor.
If you make the decision to use a prong, make sure it is a good one that is not too sharp, call the school that you got your dog from and ask what they recommend and always have a secondary collar on your dog when you use it, prongs have a tendency to come apart when you least expect it.
good luck,
Bryan
