[nagdu] guide dog responsibilities

I have been downloading my mail from webmail onto my old laptop so am
responding to some pretty old notes. But that's okay. :)

How has your info gathering and decision making been moving along with
relation to a guide dog.

I have been going through the process of deciding if I should get a dog for
about the last year and have finally applied at several schools.   It looks
pretty good to getting a dog this year at some pont. I'd be curious to chat
with you a bit off line to see what some of your concerns are/were and maybe
share what some of my concerns were and how I've worked my way through them.
Many due to talking with people here on the list of course.

    Hello,
My name is Chris Jones, and I am new to the list.  I expect to learn much
from this list.  
I am a lifelong user of the cane for mobility, but I have always been
attracted to the guide dog.  I always held back because I felt that the
responsibility required was too much for what I was willing and capable of
maintaining.  I would like those on the list to perhaps give reasons why
they finally made that plunge into the guide dog lifestyle.  
On a side note, those of you with guide dogs, have you found the general
public to give you more respect?  I have the assumption that cane users are
not looked at the same as far as traveling independently in relation to the
general public.
