Sounds like I use my comb for what some people use the furminator for.

I have a golden, and I primarily use a Furminator first, then a pin brush
(the kind with wide set apart stiff wire bristles with rounded ends), then a
wire slicker brush, then a soft bristle brush at the end to get rid of loose
hair. I do also have a Zoom Groom, but that doesn't hold the hair real well
so I don't use it much. The tools I got from Leader are the slicker, a
metal comb, and the Zoom Groom. The only thing I use the comb for is to
clean out the brushes. I bought the Furminator and a double sided brush
that has a pin brush on one side and a soft bristle brush on the other. The
pin brush is great for getting out tangles and isn't so harsh on her coat as
the comb was.

How to describe the furminator... It's like a very very fine tooth comb set
into the end of an ergonomic handle in such a way that it almost looks like
a claw. That is, it doesn't stick off the end of the handle sideways like
most brushes/combs do, it's made so that the comb part is perpendicular to
the handle, so it's easy to hold onto and do long strokes. You use it very
gently, and it is really great for removing the excess undercoat without
stripping it. There are 3 different sizes. I got the medium sized one so
that I can more easily get in the tough spots, and to use on my cats as
well. They can be kinda pricy, so you have to shop around for the best
deal, not at the pet store usually. I got mine on sale from sitstay.com.
