[nagdu] PETA opposes the use of guide dogs

I am all for Animal rights and I do understand that some people from
the animal rights movement are against working animals. I can only
hope if they get to meet me and Jilli they might change their mind.
However their IS a lot of animal cruelty going on.

I can't comment about working dogs in USA since I don't live there.
However I have heard of guide dog owners not letting their dogs off
the leases for a bit of play time. In England some guide dog owners do
this, some don't. But it's not something that's enforced very much. I
think it should be.

Jilli is just about to retire. Strangely enough when I told some of my
vegan friends about it they thought I would 'need' another dog and
actively encouraged me to get one. So it seems they believe in another
myth that blind need dogs to take care of them. That I won't be able
to manage without a dog. Sigh.

My dad wants to keep Jilli after she's retired and also believes in
that Myth. However I really want to keep her with me.

When Jilli retires I'm not going for another dog until Jilli leaves
this earth. I'm going to use a long cane instead. At least while Jilli
is alive.

Helene.
