[nagdu] a bizaare question

Irish will move out of the way for me almost all of the time, but he will
hardly ever move out of the way when my husband is coming and we're both
blind. Guess it's selective! Hahahah!

I do think it takes our dogs a while to figure out we're blind.
I think some of their reaction, such as moving out of the way, has to do
with what kind of training they were given in their puppy raiser homes.
If the sighted people always acted sighted, and walked around them, then the
dogs have the idea that they don't have to move for us.
Perhaps they can be otherwise convinced when we trip over them, perhaps not.
I don't think my Nellie ever figured it out.
Rhoda, on the other hand, seems to know instinctively that she needs to move
out of the way when I'm coming.
And she does not lie down in the middle of my path, as Nellie used to.

I have a question and I've never really discussed it...I know that our dogs
obviously guide us because it was what they were trained to do, but does
anyone really know or has it been discussed whether our dogs really know
that we're blind and understand that we are blind? I'm just curious of this.

My first guide dog, Vanda, moved out of my way when she would see me coming,
but Hadley just lays on the floor expecting me to walk around her. So I was
just curious about that.
