   Hi, Wayne,
Detecting the presence of heartworms requires a blood test. Partly because
of the way all the heartworm preventive products work, there are none that
you can get without a prescription. The ProHeart or IverHeart products
which The Seeing Eye uses, are available from KV Vet Supply in David City,
Nebraska. All you have to do when ordering it from them is to call your
vet's office with the KV Vet people on three-way calling and have them
verify over the phone, or by sending a Fax, that your dog has been recently
tested for heartworms and the test came back as a negative, that the dog is
heartworm free. Then, they will will sell you the heartworm meds as about
one-half to sixty percent of the price your vet might charge you, even after
including your vet's discount if any for guide dog owners. The more common
brand names, which cost more but have the same medication in the same
strength as the cheaper brands, are: HeartGuard, HeartGuard Plus, and
Interceptor.

The HeartGuard and HeartGuard Plus, as well as the Iverheart and ProHeart
products all use the active ingredient, Ivermectin. Interceptor uses a
different active ingredient. Interceptor, and HeartGuard Plus also have
ingredients to act against other types of worms, such as hookworms,
roundworms, and whipworms, all of which live in the intestinal tract.

KV Vet Supply almost always beats all the other large discount pet supply
houses like JB Wholesale, even after including JB's five percent discount
for Seeing Eye grads, as well as other suvery good suppliers like
petsmart.com (formerly R.C. Steele), Valley Vet Supply, and Omaha Vet
Supply.

The widely advertised-on-TV supplier, Pet Meds, has been under investigation
several times by the Florida Attorney General's office for selling
grey-market imported, and off-label and otherwise inferior products to get
their cheap prices. Even so, they don't beat KV Vet Supply's prices, and
all the other suppliers charge more for shipping and handling than KV Vet.
