I would go to a different handle on the harness and see if that puts 
you away from the dog just a bit.
As far as a bag, you can get a leather back pack purse, or just a back pack.
All carry them when needed.
I also use a fanny pack, then my hands are free.
I don't have a leather one at this time, but I know a place that has one.
Just depends on how much one needs to carry.
