You may want to try an off-set handle for the mud on your pants.  As  
for carrying stuff; I have a backpack when I need to take my Macbook  
or big stuff around with me.  however for small stuff like wallet,  
keys, meds, etc-- my dog wears a service vest on top of her harness.   
I don't forget my money and important stuff because she is wearing it  
with her harness.
