[nagdu] owner training

Julie,

Ditto on the necessity for knowing other owner-trainers! I've mentioned
that in that regard, you are one of my idols and personal saviors, right?
/grin/ I still run across situations where I find myself thinking, "What
would Julie say? What would Julie do?"

Or Rox, or Ann, or Mardi, or.... A few others who are on this list and a
number who aren't.

If you decide to owner train, be sure you have a good internet connection
for research and networking with other owner trainers and guide dog users.
Oh, I would also advise being sure you know how to spell the word
"exhaustion" since I've never noticed a trainer with a new dog who doesn't
begin using that word above all others fairly quickly. /smile/

Why do we think this is fun again? /grin/

Michelle,

You are right that owner training is a serious commitment and a lot of hard
work. However I don't think vision is necessary. I have a friend who has
owner trained her guide who is totally blind. she's not on this list
though. I have very, very little residual vision...20/1000 or so. It's hard

to measure accurately when you get that low.

I'm very glad that owner training is becoming a respectable option. It makes

it lots easier to find others doing it, who are willing to talk about it.
I don't think there's any way I could have been successful without all the
owner trainers who came before me, who were willing to share their
experiences and help me with my 1,765,637,002 questions. *smile*

Julie
