[nagdu] ranting handling skills?

Nimer,

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have that take! I don't know if that makes
me right, but it's always good to have company!

I forgot to mention that what I have taught Mitzi to do if she has concerns
is to go behind me and let me deal with whatever it is while she is
protected. Whether she would do this in a full-on vicious dog attack, I
don't know and really hope I never find out. However, she does alert me and
obey my direction to "get behind me" if something's wiggy and we're worried
about our safety.

Some of that approach on my part comes from history on the ranch with tunnel
vision and night blindness and a sociopathic abuser for a father. Who
didn't much appreciate defectives in the family! Guess who got tossed into
out of control situations involving large and often distressed or aggressive
animals? And even the few dog fights with stranger dogs. Well, I have more
recent practice as well, stepping between Daisy and Mitzi, although now
their conflicts are formalized and quite civil. /smile/ Anyway, I'm a bit
too lacking in hesitancy when it comes to stepping into the middle of a
literal hairball, whether it involves teeth or hooves or horns... So the
get behind me strategy works. Also, because I lost fear of that sort of
thing a long time ago, I don't have to think to show no fear, which can give
an aggressive predator a bit of a shock.

Still haven't figured out how to deal with aggressive social workers
shielded by a wall of blind kids. We did use the get behind me strategy
there, though, so were able get out of harm's way. When I let one of those
same social workers get away with attacking me from behind, I wasn't aware
of that danger or that I wasn't dealing with civilized humans -- in their
bosses, either. Sigh. Sorry. Guess getting see those two do it someone
else -- a bunch of someone elses -- sparked my latent aggression just a bit.
I need to quit yapping and get to doing!

Lora,

You got a protective dog. I'm going to have all kind of people
disagreeing with me here, but to me it's a goo dsign that your dog
will lunge and protect you from other dogs. My dog will wag, lick, and
if a dog came too close and started barking, she'd shake and lay down.
That being said, have you tried something like a gentle leader when
you know you're going to be around dogs that he may try to lunge at?

Thanks
Nimer J
