[nagdu] Explaining to parents that guide dogs are useful

Yes.
With a guide, you need to always be aware and thinking about how what
you do will impact it's ability to work both short-term and long term.
You also want to be able and willing to take care of the dog most of the
time.
Depending on your lifestyle and your priorities at any given moment,
this is not as easy as it sounds.
Those who have been on the list awhile will recall that I had no problem
taking care of my dog until I had my daughter. Once that happened, I
found taking care of the dog to be harder and less enjoyable. It's fun
to cuddle up with a dog and brush him/her if you have all the time in
the world to do other things, or if those other things won't literally
cry for your attention. It's easy to put people food out of reach if
you don't have a toddler that thinks it's great fun to toss half of each
meal to the dog. With a pet dog, your safety is not at stake. Not true
with a guide, and you must *always* keep that in mind.

I have a pet dog, so I hope I am well acquainted with the care a dog
requires. Besides the fact that with a guide dog the entire
responsibility
of its care is mine, is there any difference in care with a guide dog
than a
pet?

Thanks for all your helpful advice and suggestions.
Mark
