[nagdu] Explaining to parents that guide dogs are useful

Susan,
Are you saying that your cane skills weren't where they needed to be, or
are you saying that you weren't emotionally ready for your first dog.
I ask because it sounds like you're saying both and I'm curious.
For me, my cane skills are fine. I'm just not emotionally ready for a
dog, all the giving and work required to make a partnership successful.
To the high-schooler and anybody else on the list, it is very much like
having a child, but a child that will never grow up and gain the ability
in increments of taking care of themselves. To compare it to a marriage
is a little more accurate, in that you can choose to enter or exit a
marriage for any reason, something you can't do with a child, at least
not one that is not yet an adult. The commonalities between spouse, dog
and child is that they all need to feel valued, they all need to feel
like they are contributing, and they all need love and respect as well
as trust which you need before you get to respect and anything based on
rules.
Susan, thank you for sharing your story with the list.

With a guide dog, daily coming combing and brushing are essential, since
your guide will not be hanging out in the yard or house all day, but
accompanying you everywhere you go, and must be in tip-top cleanliness
to be
welcome anywhere.

I have a pet dog, so I hope I am well acquainted with the care a dog
requires. Besides the fact that with a guide dog the entire
responsibility
of its care is mine, is there any difference in care with a guide dog
than a
pet?

Thanks for all your helpful advice and suggestions.
Mark
