Hi Jenifer,
I got my first Leader Dog Monty a little over a year and a half ago.  I have 
a cat named Patches.  In order to keep Monty out of the literbox, I bought 
one with a top on it.  This seems to help, though it will take some careful 
attention being paid to your dog to make sure that he/she does not decide to 
get into the box.  Monty did that a total of two times, and each time I 
caught him, I made a big deal out of the fact that he had been a bad dog.  I 
put him in a down stay for about ten minutes to reinforce this.  He hasn't 
gotten into the litterbox again.  It really is all about making sure that 
the dog learns what the boundaries are.
