I have noticed that the other owner-trainers here, who theoretically have a
great deal more control over some of those specifics, end up with something
else because it is the best dog for them.

I did look at a lot of dogs before finding Monty, but I wouldn't say I had a
lot of dogs to choose from.

Let's use the 40 dogs example from Ginger's message. Those are all eligible
guide dogs. They have all the characteristics to make a good guide for
somebody, maybe not me, but none-the-less someone.

I looked at 40 dogs, at least. The vast majority of those dogs were not
suitable for guide work. They were too fearful, aggressive, independent or
totally lacked appropriate socialization. Sure I could have kept looking
for the Doberman that I had my heart set on, but I had to decide what my
priorities were. Did I want to be working with a trained guide sooner or
did I want to hold out for the perfect breed, confirmation, coloring etc?
For me the hands down answer is that I wanted a guide in the next year or
so.

Interesting ponderings though!
