Hi Robert,
If I remember right, GDA wanted one to pay their own way to the school. If 
that wasn't possible, they used to get someone to "sponsor" the person - 
usually the labor union that started the school (forget the name of it!) or 
an airline was helping out at the time I went there.  My family paid my 
airfare there.  I live in San Diego so the airfare wasn't too much back then 
in 1990!
